Design of a Coincident Microphone Array for 5.1-Channel Audio Recording Using the Mid-Side Recording Technique

چکیده
In this paper, a 5.1-channel audio recording method is proposed by applying the mid-side (MS) stereo recording technique to a coincident microphone array. The coincident microphone array consists of a backward-facing cardioid microphone and the MS microphone array which is composed of a pair of forward-facing cardioid and sideways-facing figure-eight microphones. These 3 microphones produce two bi-directional signals and one uni-directional signal through additive and subtractive procedures. Using these signals, the rotated uni-directional signals are produced and synthesized at each angle according to the 5.1-channel speaker array. The performance of the proposed 5.1channel audio recording method is evaluated using a directional response test and a localization test. It is shown from the tests that the proposed recording method provides a beam pattern well at each direction on the basis of the 5.1channel speaker configuration and has localization performance within ±8.2 degrees.

Recording and Reproduction over Two Loudspeakers as Heard Live Part 2: Recording Concepts and Practices
For a half century, the crucial interaction between recording engineer and monitor loudspeakers during two-channel stereophonic recording has not been resolved, leaving the engineer to cope with uncertainties. However, recent advances in defining and improving this loudspeaker-room-listener interface have finally allowed objectivity to inform and shape the engineer’s choices. The full potential...
متن کاملModifying the Directional Responses of a Coincident Pair of Microphones by Postprocessing*
The proposed technique processes coincident or nearly coincident microphone stereo recordings to change the angle between and the width of the directional responses of the microphones effectively. Through this modification of the responses the width and spaciousness of the stereo recording can be controlled without introducing any artificial reverberation into the recording. The algorithm is ba...

متن کاملBeamforming using a spherical microphone array based on legacy microphone characteristics
This paper presents a numerical approach that projects frequency-dependent directivity patterns of classic recording microphones onto steerable beams created with a spherical microphone array. In an anechoic chamber, the spatial and timbral characteristics of a legacy recording microphone and the characteristics of a 120-channel spherical microphone array were measured. Using a least-square mat...
متن کاملMultiresolution Source/Filter Model for Low Bitrate Coding of Spot Microphone Signals
In this paper, a multiresolution source/filter model for coding of audio source signals (spot recordings) is proposed. Spot recordings are a subset of the multimicrophone recordings of a music performance, before the mixing process is applied for producing the final multichannel audio mix. The technique enables low bitrate coding of spot signals with good audio quality (above 3.0 perceptual gra...
